THE IROC APPROACH
Six questions before the next commitment.
Use the clinical need, evidence and adoption requirements to decide what to investigate, develop or implement next.
01
Clinical need
What problem does this solve, for whom, and compared with what?
02
Evidence
What is demonstrated, what remains uncertain and what is missing?
03
Adoption
Why would patients and clinical teams use it—and what might stop them?
04
Commercial viability
Who pays, what does delivery require and can repeat use be sustainable?
05
Strategic fit
How does it fit the company’s or clinic group’s priorities?
06
Regulatory path
What must be established for the intended use and market?
A WORKED EXAMPLE
What the first result taught us.
Early wavefront-guided LASIK studies connected optical measurement with treatment. Encouraging results also exposed limits in the correction of higher-order aberrations.
The next useful question was therefore which limitations required better evidence and technical refinement. Clinical translation advances through both findings.
