These examples show my role in ophthalmic research, product development and company building—and what the evidence did and did not establish.
01 / OPTICS + ENGINEERING
From optical measurement to individualised laser treatment.
Early results are useful when their limitations guide the next study or design decision.
- The question
- How can the optical characteristics of an individual eye inform a more individualized laser treatment?
- My contribution
- With Maik Kaemmerer and Theo Seiler, I worked on early wavefront-guided LASIK research. Our 2001 clinical paper also identified my scientific consultancy with WaveLight.
- Evidence and outcome
- A published clinical study connected wavefront measurements with customized treatment. It reported promising results alongside incomplete correction of higher-order aberrations and a need for further controlled studies.
02 / RESEARCH + TRANSLATION
From cross-linking research to clinical delivery.
Translation includes engineering, clinical evidence and a workable route to use.
- The question
- How can a corneal treatment move from scientific development into practical delivery?
- My contribution
- I contributed to cross-linking research and founded IROC Innocross, working with scientific, engineering and clinical colleagues on the UV-X devices.
- Evidence and outcome
- In 2014, Avedro acquired business assets and licensed intellectual property from IROC Innocross, including the UV-X device line. This was an asset and licensing transaction.
03 / MEASUREMENT + DEVELOPMENT
Connecting ocular measurements with treatment planning.
A measurement becomes valuable when it can inform a clinical decision.
- The question
- How can ocular measurements support individualized intraocular-lens planning?
- My contribution
- I co-founded ClearSight Innovations in 2013 and led product development as CTO, alongside co-founder and CEO Ronan Byrne and the team.
- Evidence and outcome
- The Mirricon concept combined measurements of the cornea, crystalline lens and axial length with optical ray tracing. The contemporaneous presentation describes proof-of-concept work; it does not establish superior clinical outcomes.
04 / BIOLOGY + COMPANY BUILDING
Developing vision correction through tissue addition.
Technology, evidence generation and commercialisation need to advance together.
- The question
- Can shaped donor corneal tissue create an additional approach to vision correction?
- My contribution
- I co-founded Allotex with David Muller and serve as CEO. The work connects corneal tissue technology, clinical evidence and commercial development.
- Evidence and outcome
- In January 2026, Allotex announced conditional FDA approval of an Investigational Device Exemption for a U.S. presbyopia study, following commercialization outside the United States. This authorizes clinical investigation, not U.S. commercial use.
